By the end of year 4, a student needs to be able to:
[1] Find a fraction of a number by using repeated addition or subtraction
1/3 of 12 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, so 1/3 of 12 is 4
[2] Find unit fractions of a continuous region
Find 1/2, 1/3. 1/4 ... of a length or area (e.g., circle)
[3] Order unit fractions or fractions with the same denominators, and explain why they are larger or smaller
1/2 or 1/3, 1/8 or 1/12, 1/5 or 1/3
2/4 or 3/4, 5/8 or 7/8
Below are links to videos of the strategies used to solve fraction problems. To help make it easier, I have included a table

The difference between year 3/4 and year 5 is that in year 3/4 addition is used to solve the answers, whereas in year 5 multiplication and division are used. The equations are essentially the same, it is what strategy that is used to solve it (addition or multiplication/ division) that is the difference.
Year 3 strategy
Repeated addition ( 3+3+3+3)
This strategy helps you to solve equations like: 1
- of 12 =
4
Year 4 strategy 1
Using repeated addition
